Hat
The original for this pattern was based to fit a tall 10 yr old with room to grow. The sizing ended up that it can fit a teen/ small adult. I have added instructions At the end for a hat of a smaller size, however to ensure the hat you make fits please refer to the last page with sizing measurements based on the age you want to make it for. how this hat is designed the last 3 rows will not be snug against their head like a beanie.
note for a seamless hat you will want a stitch marker. I have written the pattern to allow you to do a seamless. If you are more comfortable with the chain seem, at the end of each round simply slip stitch into the first stitch and chain 2.*

Strap
4.5mm hook (brown)
For this I have listed my measurements below, and what was done. Realize if your tension is a little different you may need more or less chains. I always put the hat on a foam head when doing this part to make sure i have no more than i need for chains by wrapping it around as I am making the strap to measure. also this pattern is only for one size, you will need to make less for a smaller sized hat.
Chain 81 , in second ch from hook SC. SC in each ch, F/O and leave a LONG tail to sew this on around the hat. (79)
Assembly:
I always recommend to either lay your base hat flat, or use a foam/ model head to help you with placement.
Start with the ears, they go close together near your magic circle of the hat.
Now take the eyes and place them a little farther apart than you would most faces, due to the llama’s eyes being on the sides of their head. Pin them down so you can adjust if necessary.
Pin the upper lip/ nose into place filled with fluff, it will be just above where the changes from HDC to the clusters.
Once all of that is pinned, lightly fill the nose/upper lip with poly fill and attach it. Then you will sew on the lower lip to the bottom of the upper lip/ nose. IF the bottom lip is too flappy for you, attach the back part of the teeth to the upper lip as well. This will secure it in place more, but still keep it sticking out like the character.
Now sew on the eyes.
Last is the brown strap. Make sure that the hat is stretched/ on a foam hat for this part. If you sew this on too tight to the hat, it will restrict the hat size.

Hat Sizing Reference Chart
I use this chart a lot when making hats for various sizes. These measurements will let you take the basic parts of this pattern and repeat it in a smaller size.
once you increase to the size of the crown diameter, you would go 1HDC in every stitch till you 2-3 inches short of reaching hat height, at this point you will start the climbing vine stitch.
